Senate Appoints Ashiru To Replace Umahi After He Accepted Another Post

The Nigerian Senate has appointed a replacement for Senator Dave Umahi in its leadership.

The Senate on Wednesday announced that it has appointed Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru (APC – Kwara South) as its new Deputy Leader. The post of Deputy Leader was occupied by the former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Umahi. However, following his resignation from the Senate after he accepted his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, the post became vacant. Umahi is the current Minister of Works under the Executive Arm of government.

The Senate also appointed Senator Nwebonyi Peter Onyeka (APC – Ebonyi North) as the new Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the new appointments at plenary.

Senator Ashiru was the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate before his new appointment to replace Umahi. These appointments to fill vacant positions became necessary in order to prevent any vacuum in government.
