Yoruba Nation: 47 Agitators Released From Police Custody
The police have released 47 of the 48 Yoruba Nation agitators who were arrested during the July 3 event in Lagos state.
The announcement was made by Maxwell Adeleye, a spokesperson for Ilana Omo Oodua, a Yoruba self-determination group, in a statement posted on Tuesday, July 27. They were released when they met their bail conditions, he added.
Olasunkanmi Tanimola, Kabiru Lawanson, Chinemerem Emmanuel, RasakiMusibau, Lukman Olalade, Olasanmi Oladipupo, Bashiru Shittu, Taofeek Abdusalam, Olamilekan Abata, Abdullahi Sikiru, Tosin Adeleye, and Babatunde Lawal are among those who have been granted bail.
The statement was as follows:
“This is to inform the general public that 47 out of the 48 protesters arrested by the Nigerian Police during the Yoruba Nation Rally held July 3rd, 2021 have been released from detention after meeting their bail conditions.”
Tajudeen Bakare, one of the agitators, remains in detention after the police filed a murder case against him.
Bakare was accused with the murder of Jumoke Oyeleke, a 25-year-old trader who was killed by a stray gunshot fired by police while dispersing agitators during the gathering. Mr Bakare was allegedly in possession of a Beretta pistol and two live rounds when he “unlawfully killed” the trader, according to the police.
Given the seriousness of the accusations leveled against him, the agitator was denied bail.
