Oshiomhole Makes Major Demand On Behalf Of NLC Members After Money Was Approved For Them

Former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has called on organized labor to ensure the payment of N35,000 wage awards to all workers in Nigeria before Christmas, in response to the petrol subsidy removal.

Speaking at the 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Non-Academics Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in Abuja, Oshiomhole stressed that the payment should apply to workers in both the public and private sectors. He warned that employers who fail to comply should not expect a peaceful Christmas celebration.

Oshiomhole stated: “NLC threatened strike or something like that because that was not exactly the way we used to do it. Now N35,000 was approved, but I don’t know what NLC demanded because it was not exposed to the Nigerian people. The tradition is the National Working Committee and National Executive Council would meet, debate and say based on this increase, this is the minimum without which we would not accept.”

He emphasized that the decision should be the collective stance of NLC, which NASU is a prominent member. Oshiomhole urged for the nationwide implementation of the N35,000 wage, applying to all workers, regardless of whether they are employed in the federal, state, local government, or private sector. He warned that failure to fulfill this agreement would result in a lack of Christmas celebrations for employers in both public and private sectors.
