Niger Delta University Shut Down Over School Fees Hike

Following student protests over an increase in school fees, the early closure of the school pay portal, and a recent order by management for students to wear uniforms to avoid indecent dressing on school grounds, the Bayelsa State government-owned Niger Delta University (NDU) has been closed.

The school was closed on Wednesday, according to the DAILY POST, following a statement by the registrar, Mr. Benjamin Joffa.

The letter read” Following the ongoing unrest in the university, I am directed to inform the general public and the university community that academics activities have been suspended indefinitely with immediate effect”

”Consequently, all students are directed to vacate the university campuses and its facilities before 3pm.

The recent incident that sparked student protests has been met with condemnation and calls for the school’s administration to be fired.

On Monday, Vice-Chancellor Professor Edoumiekumo ordered the closing of the school payment system, stating that any student who has not paid for his or her clearance will have their admission revoked and returned home.

Edoumiekumo further stated that students of the institution will be required to wear uniforms, which will only be available for purchase through the school administration.

Comrade Daniel Sapele, a former Chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Egbemo Clan Central Zone, has advocated for the Vice-dismissal, Chancellor’s calling his acts as not only unlawful, inhuman, but also evil and barbarous.
