‘May We Not Witness War’, Sunday Igboho Says In First Video After Release

Sunday Adeyemo, often known as Igboho, a Yoruba human rights activist, has advised against war.

In a video released after his release from prison on Wednesday, he said this.

Igboho was seen in the video addressing the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

“Let’s hope the Ukraine problem does not escalate into a third world war.” “May God spare us from witnessing world war,” Igboho remarked.

Igboho, who fled the country to avoid imprisonment, was allowed a conditional release from a prison in Benin eight months after he was held there, according to reports.

Igboho was seized in Cotonou, Benin’s commercial hub, on suspicion of “criminal affiliation.”

Igboho’s lawyers claim he won’t be able to leave Benin until his case is resolved.

Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were detained in the Benin Republic on their way to Germany on July 19 after escaping a deadly raid on their Ibadan apartment by Department of State Service operatives on July 1, 2021. His wife had already been discharged.

At the time, police accused Igboho and his associates of plotting a violent insurgency against the Nigerian government.

The Department of State Services apprehended and detained 13 of Igboho’s colleagues during the deadly raid on his Sooka home. During the raid, two of Igboho’s supporters, named as Adogan and Alfa, were killed.

Seven AK-47 rifles, three pump-action guns, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five cutlasses, one jack-knife, one pen knife, two pistol holsters, a pair of binoculars, a wallet containing $5, local and international driving licenses in his name, ATM cards, a German residence permit No. YO2N6K1NY bearing his name, two whistles, 50 cartridge

Three charm jackets/traditional body armor, two laptops (one Toshiba and one Compaq), Igboho’s passport, and those of his assistants were among the items found.

The aides were eventually released after a court order.

The activist was also given N20 billion in damages by an Oyo State High Court. The court further ordered the Attorney General of the Federation and the Department of State Security not to arrest Igboho.
Since July 2021, when he fled after a raid on his residence in Ibadan, Nigeria has been seeking his extradition. Military equipment and other weapons were discovered at the premises, according to officials.
