Major Shakeup In House Of Reps As Speaker Makes Top Appointments, Replaces Many Officers

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajuddeen, has officially announced the appointment of chairmen and deputies for 27 reconstituted Committees of the House.

This restructuring includes 26 existing committees and introduces a new committee named the ‘Committee on Nutrition and Food Security.’

During the Plenary session on Friday, after the second reading of the 2024 Appropriation Bill, Speaker Tajuddeen unveiled the names of the new committee heads and their deputies. He emphasized the importance of a smooth transition, urging outgoing chairmen and deputies to facilitate the handover process to their successors. This transition is crucial as the House gears up for interactions with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government concerning the upcoming deliberations on the 2024 Appropriation Bill.

Tajuddeen remarked, “These are the updated lists of committee Chairmen and Deputies. It is important that where there is a need for handing over, the new and the outgoing should please ensure that they hand over immediately so that the budget engagement with MDAs will be seamless.”

The reconstitution of these committees stems from the removal of some House members following the rulings of the Court of Appeal on National Assembly Elections. Approximately 15 members of the House were affected by these rulings, leading to the reshuffling of leadership roles within the House Committees.
