Labour Party Set To Lose Senate Seat As Two Candidates Emerge Ahead Of Election

Two candidates have emerged as the Labour Party’s contenders for the upcoming Ebonyi South senatorial bye-election, prompted by Dave Umahi’s decision to take on ministerial responsibilities after securing victory in the polls.

The two candidates vying for the position are Linus Okorie, a former member of the House of Representatives representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo Federal Constituency, and Mr. Nwabueze Nwachukwu, a 60-year-old businessman.

The primary election held at Amuro/Mgbom Community Primary School field in Afikpo, the senatorial district’s headquarters, resulted in Okorie’s victory. The Electoral Committee Chairman, Comrade Ayo Olorufemi, announced that Okorie secured 40 votes, while Nwabueze Ogo Eze had 10 votes, and Fred Okereke garnered 7 votes.

It’s worth noting that Okorie had previously contested for the same senatorial seat in the 2023 general election but lost to Umahi.

Simultaneously, the second primary, reportedly held at an undisclosed location in the state, saw a 60-year-old businessman, Mr. Nwabueze Nwachukwu, emerging as a candidate. Nwachukwu obtained 50 votes out of the 57 cast.
