JUST IN: Aisha, Other Protesters Released Following Backlash Against Govt

In response to the outcry following the arrest of demonstrators protesting against the surge in food prices in Minna, the Niger State Government has granted administrative bail to Aisha Jibrin, the woman who spearheaded the protest, along with 24 others detained by the police.

Hajiya Binta Mamman, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, announced the release of the protesters on administrative bail, stating, “All of those arrested by the police, along with the initiator, Aisha Jibrin, have been released on bail. We apologize to the family of Aisha and others for the arrest.”

Mamman emphasized the state government’s commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and ensuring transparency, fairness, and justice in all legal proceedings. She urged the public to remain patient and understanding, assuring that the government is implementing measures to alleviate economic hardships.

The arrest of Jibrin and others stemmed from their leadership roles in the protest, during which they, along with 22 youths, allegedly obstructed public roads despite attempts by the Deputy Governor to address them. The police further claimed that the protesters damaged vehicles and vandalized the Kpakungun police station.
