Gombe To Prevent Dowen College Style Bullying In Schools – Commissioner
To avoid a repeat of what is happening in other schools around the country, the Gombe state administration says it has taken proactive efforts to stop bullying in all of its public schools.
The state commissioner for Education, Dauda Batari, said in a Gombe interview on Thursday that the steps were implemented to preserve all kids’ mental and psychological well-being.
“I want to assure you that we will redouble efforts to ensure that what is happening in other states did not happen in Gombe,” Mr Batari said, adding that the state government would “protect children from external and internal aggression.”
Recall that a relative of the 12-year-old deceased Sylvester Oromoni Jnr stated his young cousin was severely bullied to death by five other students at Dowen College in Lagos for refusing to join a cult.
The state government, according to the Gomber commissioner, has also taken steps to protect pupils’ safety while at school.
“We have liaised with security operatives in the state as well as communities and traditional leaders to ensure the safety of the students,” he said.
Mr Batari added that the government was also working closely with the UNESCO, UNICEF and Japan on the safe school project.
