Chelsea defeated Newcastle in a penalty shootout after the Carabao Cup clash saw goals from Callum Wilson and Mykhailo Mudryk in normal time with Kieran Trippier and Matt Ritchie missing from the penalty spot
Welcome to football.newsdirect live coverage of Mauricio Pochettino’s press conference. Chelsea recorded a dramatic win over Newcastle United to secure a place in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
It did not come easily for the west London side at Stamford Bridge as a catalogue of errors saw Callum Wilson open the scoring and the Blues struggle to find a strike of their own. Their job was then made more difficult with Enzo Fernandez and LevI Colwill both leaving the pitch with issues.
Christopher Nkunku finally made his long-awaited debut in the second period, but it was another who was able to have the crucial impact. Mykhailo Mudryk capitalised on a lingering Kieran Trippier to slot away in stoppage time to force penalties.
Trippier’s night didn’t get any better from the spot before Djordje Petrovic pulled off a brilliant save versus Matt Ritchie. West London was jubilant and it was a big moment for the Blues. Plenty for Pochettino to discuss.
