Who Chelsea can face in Carabao Cup semi-finals after crucial win against Newcastle

Chelsea have secured their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after beating Newcastle at Stamford Bridge. The Blues fell behind in the first half after Callum Wilson fired home following a Benoit Badiashile error at the back.

Substitute Mykhailo Mudryk scored a late equaliser to send the game to a penalty shootout. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were able to win 4-2 on penalties to book their place in the final four of the competition with Matt Ritchie and Kieran Trippier missing their spot kicks.

Christopher Nkunku made his first competitive appearance for Chelsea after coming on as a late substitute. The Frenchman has been involved in training since the start of December after fully recovering from a knee injury that kept him sidelined since August.

The EFL have confirmed that the draw to decide each semi-final tie will be held after the quarter-final clash between Liverpool and West Ham on Wednesday, December 20. Given the game can go to extra-time and penalties, the exact start time will not be confirmed until that evening but the earliest it can realistically begin is around 10.15pm GMT.

The semi-final ties are two legs and will be played across the weeks commencing January 8 and 22, 2024. Chelsea will find out their ball number on the day of the draw.
