Northern governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform have stated that they will support a southerner as the ruling party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
Simon Lalong, Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Plateau State, stated this to State House correspondents in Abuja on Monday.
Following their meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in the Federal Capital Territory, the governors, all 13 of them, made their positions known (FCT).
In his briefing, Governor Lalong explained that the leaked memo that went viral last Saturday accurately represented the viewpoint of the northern governors, and that they had come to officially confer with the President.
According to the governor, President Buhari has not chosen a flagbearer for the APC from among the 23 candidates slated to run in the party’s primary.
Rather, he stated that the President had requested that the governors meet with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to resolve the issue of a consensus candidate through democratic procedures.
The governors’ decision to return power to the South, according to Governor Lalong, was made to ensure equity, peace, and harmony in the country.
