BREAKING: NLC President’s Whereabouts Unknown As Hoodlums, Operatives Descend On Labour Members

The whereabouts of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, President, Joe Ajaero is unknown.

This development became clear after operatives from the Imo State Police Command apprehended Ajaero during an ongoing protest in Imo state. The situation escalated as hoodlums attacked the protesters, damaging vehicles, and causing injuries to members of the labor union.

At the time of this report, Ajaero’s whereabouts remain unknown, as heavily armed security personnel took him away. Prior to his arrest, Ajaero had instructed all union members and affiliated organizations to halt operations across all sectors in Imo State, including air, land, and sea, as part of the protest initiated by the union.

The protest was announced following a Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in Owerri, the state capital, on Tuesday, October 31, 2023. Ajaero accused Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma of neglecting workers’ welfare and violating their rights. He claimed that the governor’s hostile actions had resulted in the deaths of several workers due to unpaid salaries.

He also criticized the state government for its failure to adhere to the national minimum wage and accused Governor Uzodimma of disregarding previous agreements, particularly the accord reached on January 9, 2021. As the situation unfolds, the labor community awaits further updates on Ajaero’s status and the ongoing protest in Imo State.
