6 Top Lawmakers Sacked By Court After Being Sworn In (FULL LIST)
The Court of Appeal has made several rulings resulting in the removal of lawmakers from their respective seats.
Those judgments were delivered in the past few weeks which created significant buzz and discussion among the public with those sacked and their supporters feeling so aggrieved. Below is a summary of the six affected lawmakers.
- Kwankwaso vs Datti: The Court of Appeal in Abuja reinstated Yusuf Umar Datti of the New Nigeria People’s Party in the Kura/Madobi/Garun Malam Federal Constituency Election, overturning Musa Ilyasu Kwankwaso’s victory. The court ruled that the tribunal misapplied Section 77 of the Electoral Act and had no jurisdiction over the issue of party membership.
- Nwokocha vs Akobundu: The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, removed Darlington Nwokocha, the Senate minority chief whip, from his position representing Abia Central. Augustine Akobundu of the Peoples Democratic Party was declared the rightful winner of the election.
- Suswam vs Udende: The Court of Appeal in Abuja ousted former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam from the Senate, declaring Emmanuel Udende of the All Progressives Congress the valid winner of the senatorial election in Benue North East.
- Senator Abbo vs Amos Yohanna: The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, annulled Senator Ishaku Abbo’s election representing Adamawa North Senatorial District, giving the victory to Amos Yohanna of the Peoples Democratic Party.
- Hon. Jingi Rufai vs Hon. Jaafar Magaji: An Appeal court in Abuja sacked Hon. Jingi Rufai, the representative of Mubi North, Mubi South, and Maiha of Adamawa State, in the House of Representatives, declaring Hon. Jaafar Magaji of the All Progressive Congress the rightful winner of the election for the constituency.
- Ohere vs Natasha Akpoti: The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal affirmed Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan of the Peoples Democratic Party as the winner of the Kogi Central Senatorial Election, dismissing the appeal filed by Senator Abubakar Sadiku Ohere of the All Progressives Congress.
