Wike Reveals Plan To Punish Abuja Employers, Gives Them Deadline

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has issued a caution to employers in the nation’s capital.

Wike’s major concern centres on tax obligations by those employers in the Federal Capital Territory. While mandating them to file their annual returns as expected, Wike gave a deadline for them to do the needful or face punishment.

Mustapha Sumaila, the Head of Corporate Communications at the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), conveyed this warning in a statement on Sunday.

Sumaila stated that all employers in Abuja are required to submit their 2023 annual returns on or before January 31, 2024, in accordance with Section 41 of the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA) 2011 (as amended).

He emphasized the implications outlined in Sections 94, 95, and 96 of PITA, which detail penalties for non-filing, incorrect/false declaration, and late submission. The statement also highlighted that the Service is prepared to enforce these laws on defaulters.

“FCT-IRS encourages employers of labor, organizations, and agents to file their returns before the January 31 deadline; otherwise, the late filers and non-filers are penalized in accordance with the law,” he concluded.
