We’re Ready To Negotiate With Buhari’s Govt Openly — Twitter

A week after the dictatorship shut down the social media behemoth for Nigerians, Twitter announced on Friday that it had reopened communication channels with the Buhari administration.

“Today marks one week since Twitter was blocked in Nigeria. We have informed the Nigerian government that we are ready to meet for an open discussion to address mutual concerns and see the service restored,” Twitter Police said in a statement. “We remain advocates for the free and #OpenInternet everywhere.”

The remarks came two days after Lai Mohammed, the communications minister, said Twitter had contacted him to discuss the possibility of easing the ban, though he did not elaborate.

Before lifting the ban, the government established a number of criteria, including Twitter having an office in Nigeria.

Twitter’s representative did not respond to queries for comment on whether the firm was willing to comply with Nigerian authorities’ demands.

Twitter Policy remained tight-lipped about the contents of its conversations with the regime, but promised complete transparency throughout the process.
