Tinubu, Obasanjo Mourn As Top Nigerian Leader Is Buried

Yesterday, the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, was laid to rest at his Aliiwo ancestral home in accordance with Islamic customs.

“The burial ceremony, which involved the two-rakat Janazat prayer, the Islamic prayer for the deceased, was led by the Chief Imam of Ibadan, Shelkh Abdul Ganiyu Agbotomokekeke,” stated a source familiar with the proceedings.

Following the prayers, Balogun’s remains were interred, marking the final farewell to the revered traditional ruler, who passed away on Thursday at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, after a brief illness.

The 82-year-old monarch ascended the throne on March 11, 2022, following the demise of Oba Saliu Adetun.

Reacting to the development, President Bola Tinubu said he received the news of the passing of the Olubadan with a deep sense of grief. Speaking via a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Tinubu said that Olubadan was an exceptional king who used his position to serve humanity.

In his own reaction, former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a statement by his aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, paid glowing tribute to the late Olubadan. He noted that the Olubadan left an impeccable record of incorruptible leadership, legacy of forthrightness, thoroughness and unwavering commitment to public good.
