Ogun: Police Arrest Cultist With Pistol In Igbesa Polytechnic

A suspected cultist was apprehended by police while attempting to disrupt an ongoing test at an Ogun State Government-owned polytechnic in Igbesa.

The suspect, named as Ojo Akinola Iyanu, a member of the Aiye confraternity, was apprehended with a bag containing one locally-made pistol loaded with one live cartridge, according to the State’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi.

Iyanu was apprehended Tuesday at the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, following credible intelligence that some cultists planned to disrupt the polytechnic’s examination, which he said was rescheduled after a crisis between the students’ union and the school management was resolved, according to Oyeyemi.

He claimed that the student cultists had “enacted a strategy to ensure that the examination did not take place” because they had not prepared for it.

To prevent a breakdown of law at the polytechnic, the DPO of Igbesa, SP Abayomi Adeniji, was claimed to have engaged in proper screening of all students before entering the examination venue straight from the main gate, in coordination with other security agencies.

During the screening, Oyeyemi explained that the suspect and another person, who was eventually identified as Aloma, were stopped carrying a black bag.

“While searching the bag, the second boy took to his heels, while Ojo Akinola Iyanu was quickly arrested,” Oyeyemi added.

He said the suspect confessed during interrogation that he was “a member of the dreaded Aiye confraternity.”

The police spokesman quoted Iyanu as saying his group had decided “to disrupt the examination because it came suddenly and met them unprepared.”

In his reaction, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, ordered that the suspect be transferred to the State CIID at the police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta for discreet investigation, asking that other members of the group should be hunted for and brought to book.
