SSANU Threatens Indefinite Strike

Unless the federal government executes the deal it reached with the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the current nationwide warning strike by the union would turn into an indefinite one.

In an interview on Monday in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Taiwo Arobadi, Chairman, SSANU, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) branch, revealed this.

“If the FG fulfills its obligations within the two-week warning strike, we will immediately return to our offices and resume work, but failing to do so will result in an extended strike,” Mr Arobadi warned.

He stated that the two-week warning strike was being held to force the federal government to pay their entitlements.

Mr Arobadi stated that the federal government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Memorandum of Action (MoA) with the association in October 2020 and February 2021, respectively, but has yet to implement them.

The chairman said that the MoA allowance included hazard allowance, responsibility allowance, and other concerns that its members had been campaigning for.

He also claimed that SSANU renegotiated the 2009 deal, during which they rejected the government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Accepting IPPIS, he added, would have a negative impact on the salary of all federal university employees, resulting in underpayment.

Mr Arobadi pointed out that, by inference, IPPIS would pay N45,000 to employees earning N70,000 per month.
