Rivers Assembly votes against Fubara

Rivers State House of Assembly has voted to override Governor Sim Fubara’s decision to withhold his accent on four laws passed by the lawmakers.

The laws include Rivers State Funds Management and Financial Autonomy Law 2023, Rivers State Local Government Amendment Law 2023, Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State-Owned Property Prohibition Repeal Law 2024, and Traditional Rulers Amendment Law 2024.

Their overriding votes came when some lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike had attempted to impeach Fubara.

This followed the governor’s crisis with Wike over the control of political structures and resources in Rivers State.

In the heat of the crisis, some state lawmakers defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in a show of solidarity with Wike.

However, President Bola Tinubu intervened in the matter and prevailed on Wike and Fubara to sign a peace deal in Abuja.
