Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the commission’s Chairman, revealed this at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday.

The presidential and National Assembly elections will now take place on Saturday, February 25, 2023, while gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections will take place on March 11, 2023, according to him.

The new date was set to comply with the stipulations of the Electoral Laws, which require that election notices be published at least 260 days before the elections.

The INEC chairman also stated that the electoral instructions will be released in due time.

The new Act mandates that INEC publish the election notice at least 360 days before the election.

Several organizations had urged the President to sign the law before February 22, 2022, to avoid INEC having to adjust the date to comply with the Act.

Buhari, on the other hand, signed it on February 25, 2022.
