Parallel Congresses: APC Blows Hot, Vows to Take Strong Action Against Errant Members

Following the conduct of parallel ward congresses in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party promised to punish members who disobeyed its directive on Sunday, August 1.

Recall that the APC leadership read a Riot Act to all of its chieftains in all of the country’s states on Friday, July 30, in response to the holding of parallel congresses in the states.

Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the secretary of the APC caretaker committee, revealed the information to The Punch in Abuja during an interview.

According to Akpanudoedehe, the APC will penalize members who disobeyed the party’s directive and turned to self-help in accordance with Section 21(D) of its constitution.

While adding that the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led committee had zero tolerance for indiscipline, Akpanudoedehe cautioned that party members who held alternative congresses would face punishment.

APC congresses are marred by violence.

Previously, the ruling APC’s congresses in various states around the country were marked by violence and protests by factions within the party.

Parallel congresses were held in Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, and Imo, against the wishes of the party leadership.

During the congresses, supporters of Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun state, and his predecessor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, allegedly produced two outcomes in each of the 236 wards.

The APC congresses under Governor Buni are a sham.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contended that any congress held by the APC under the leadership of Governor Buni is a sham.

Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP’s national press secretary, made the announcement on the party’s official Facebook page on Sunday, August 1.

Buni cannot hold any executive post in the APC while serving as the governor of a state, according to Ologbondiyan.
