Oyo State Sanctions 80 People Over Violation Of Environmental Law In Ibadan

The government of Oyo State has announced that eighty people have been arrested for violating environmental laws.

The State’s Environmental Task Force arrested the eighty people in Ibadan this week for violating environmental rules.

Mr. Abiodun Oni, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, said the Task Team apprehended the criminals at Ibadan’s Gate, Aleshinloye, Eleyele, Sabo, Apata, Iwo-road, Ojoo, Moniya, U.I-Agbowo, Sango, and General Gas sectors on Tuesday.

Eighty people were allegedly captured dumping garbage in prohibited locations.

Three of the criminals were found transporting rubbish to unapproved sites using automobiles.

Two of them were charged with blocking the environmental task force team from carrying out their civic obligations and were fined between 2,000 and 40,000 dollars, depending on the severity of their offenses.

He said, “The impact of indiscriminate dumping of wastes in an open space and street begging to the health and socio-economy of the state is indisputable.

“For instance, exposed wastes have been known to factor in communicable diseases that may end up requiring medical attention.

“Thus, maintaining proper hygiene is very important to us, failure to uphold some level may lead to serious health hazards to us as individuals and persons living around us”.
