Official: Manchester United name new captain

Premier League giants Manchester United have, on Thursday, formally announced the club’s new first-team captain.

The subject of the captain’s armband has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines on the red half of Manchester across the week to date.

This comes after word was forthcoming that Erik ten Hag had come to the decision to strip Harry Maguire of his duties as skipper, amid ongoing speculation surrounding the England international’s Old Trafford future.

A list of candidates to replace Maguire, in turn, was drawn up, featuring, it is understood, the likes of Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, and Bruno Fernandes.

The latter, though, quickly set himself apart from the crowd, having already donned the captain’s armband on a number of occasions across his stint in United colours.

It therefore came as little surprise when word began to spread across the media that midfielder Fernandes was indeed imminently set to be unveiled as the Red Devils’ latest on-pitch leader.

And, as alluded to above, on Thursday evening, precisely that has been confirmed.

As per an official announcement across Manchester United’s website and social media platforms:

‘Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United.

‘The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis.’
