Nasarawa Govt Begins Demolition Of 200 Illegal Structures

The state administration of Nasarawa has started demolishing over 200 unlawful constructions in the state.

Wada Yahaya, the Managing Director of the Nasarawa State Urban Development Board, revealed the information to journalists in Lafia on Monday.

He explained that the illegal structures were targeted for demolition because they were constructed near waterways, creating flooding and endangering the lives of state people.

“The effect of the global warming is affecting residents of the state in the area of flooding and because of that we are going to embark on demolition of over 200 illegal structures that are not registered with the government because they were built on waterways thereby endangering the lives of our people.

“We are starting this demolition exercise in Lafia on Tuesday because there are many illegal structures in the city. We will be moving with a mobile court and some security personnel so that those who violate our laws will be arrested and charged immediately”, he said.

The MD disclosed that the board had given notice to occupants of the illegal structures across the 13 local government areas of the state.

He lamented that most house owners who registered their properties with the board as residential buildings were making use of the buildings for commercial purposes.

“We want to warn house owners to make use of their properties based on the approval given to them by government because we have noticed that some persons who registered their properties as residential buildings are using it for commercial purposes and we will not accept such illegality”, he added.
