Appeal Court Verdict: Fresh Violence Looms As APC Stakeholders Head For Street Showdown Against NNPP Youths
Tension is escalating in Kano as stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have scheduled street demonstrations for Saturday in response to the recent Appeal Court judgment.
The court ruling sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and declared Dr. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the APC candidate, as the winner of the March 18 election in the state.
Director-General of the Gawuna/Garo Campaign Organisation, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, spoke at a press conference at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, addressing the situation. He, along with other APC stakeholders, announced that while the NNPP would conduct a mass protest in Kano on Saturday, the APC would organize a mass rally on the same day.
Bichi explained the decision, stating, “We are also going for a mass rally on Saturday as part of democracy.” When questioned about the potential for violence, he emphasized that they are law-abiding citizens but would protect themselves if necessary.
He expressed concerns about the situation worsening since the return of NNPP’s embattled leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to Kano and alleged plans for a mass protest on Saturday. Bichi urged the Kano State police command and other security agencies to take appropriate measures to prevent any violence.
“We call on the Kano State police command and other security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities and take appreciative measures to avoid loss of life and property,” he said, highlighting the fear of intimidation and threats faced by the people of Kano.
