On Wednesday, the Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta sentenced Olasunkanmi Soyobi, 25, to one year in prison for assaulting a police officer and attempting to flee police custody.

Mr Soyobi, who has no known address, was found guilty of assault and attempting to flee from police custody on three counts.

Magistrate Dehinde Dipeolu wrote in his decision that all of the evidence presented in court established beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was guilty of the crime.

Mr Dipeolu stated that the sentence did not include a fine option.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspector Lawrence Balogun, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on December 15, 2020 at Kemta Police Station, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

The prosecutor said that the convict assaulted ASP Sheriff Balogun by punching him on the face, thus sustaining injuries.

He said that the convict was in police custody for assaulting a man, adding that while he was behind the counter, he tried to escape from police custody.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 351, 135 and 356(1) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
