JUST IN: Former Senator, Nuhu Aliyu Is Dead

Nuhu Aliyu, a former senator who represented Niger North in the National Assembly, has died.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Niger State Government announced his death.

Aliyu died on Wednesday in Kaduna State after a brief illness, according to a statement from the Secretary to State Government, Ahmed Matane.

Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello halted the weekly State Executive Council Meeting after Aliyu’s death.

“The patriotic tendencies and excellent handling of legislative duties concerning the welfare of people and the nation demonstrated by late Senator Nuhu Aliyu are worthy of emulations.

“But we must take solace in the fact that from God we all come and to Him we shall all return. Nobody shall live longer than the time appointed by Almighty God,” the statement read in part.

Nuhu Aliyu, a People’s Democratic Party chieftain, was the party’s first chairman in Niger state before being elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1999 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007.

The deceased, who was born in 1941 and studied Advanced Police Management at the Police College Jos, ascended through the ranks to become a Deputy Inspector General of Police.

Before retiring, he was the head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
