JUST IN: Buhari Suspends Accountant-General Ahmed Idris For Stealing N80 Billion

According to a letter seen by Peoples Gazette, President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended Ahmed Idris, the nation’s treasurer, from office.

Mr Ahmed was suspended by finance minister Zainab Ahmed on May 18, citing the ongoing EFCC investigation on allegations that he stole and laundered more than N80 billion.

Ms Ahmed stated in the letter that the indefinite suspension will begin immediately and that Mr Ahmed should not attend the office or interact with Treasury personnel during his suspension.

Mr Ahmed, who is unrelated to the finance minister, was apprehended by anti-graft agents in Kano on Monday and brought to Abuja, where he will face prosecution.

He is the most-senior serving official under Mr Buhari to be held on graft charges, a development that comes weeks after a U.S. government report said the anti-graft office was too timid to go after senior administration officials, focusing instead on unknown and low-level crooks in and out of government.
