Insecurity: Why We Chose To Educate Nomads – Jigawa Government

According to the Jigawa State Government, educating nomads is critical to resolving the majority of the country’s insecurity issues.

The State’s Commissioner for Education, Dr Lawan Yunusa Danzomo stated this at the media engagement forum held at Manpower Development Institute, Dutse.

He said the State Government had observed that the nomads had serious limitations to equitable access to basic education through the conventional education system which is making them to involve into drug abuse and other criminal activities.

“We discovered that most of them lack Islamic and Western education; they don’t know how to pray, they do not know how to warship God. Some of them, while praying they used to be counting the names of their children”, Danzomo stated.

He said the State Government had established 381 nomads primary schools across the State “in its commitment to increase the literacy rate among pastoralists and integrate them into the national life and equipping them to make favourable contributions to the nation’s socio–economic development.”

The Commissioner noted that plans were also underway for the establishment of 10 new Junior Secondary Schools for the nomadic community to accommodate pupils that have graduated from primary schools.

He added that 164 adult education centres were also established to train the adult nomads on how to carry out their religious activities and how to settle disputes among themselves amicably.

He said all the schools were fully equipped with all the basic needs to ensure a conducive atmosphere for both the teachers and the students.

Danzomo noted that the program was yeilding a positive result.
