Imo Residents Flee Homes As Gunmen Kill Soldiers

Hundreds of residents in Awo-Mmamma community, Oru East Local Government Area, Imo State, who evacuated their houses after gunmen allegedly killed a military man on Monday afternoon expressed disappointment at having to spend the night in the bush.

On Monday, sources within the Awo-Mmamma village told a DAILY POST correspondent that there had been a large flight of people, particularly youngsters, from the community due to dread of the unknown.

He described the horrific situation as follows: “Some hoodlums attacked some soldiers at Ishieke junction in Awo Mmamma and killed one of them, then zoomed off towards Ihiala in Anambra State, where the soldiers invaded and caused havoc by setting a filling station, cars, houses, hotel, and stores on fire in retaliation.”

According to a community leader who requested anonymity, the horrible occurrence at Ishieke intersection resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of Naira.

He said, “as I speak to you now, many more houses may be burnt tonight. We’re now at the mercy of angry soldiers.

“Hundreds of our people may pass this night in the bush. Our people have escaped from their land while those still remaining now live in fear,” he said

When contacted, the Police spokesperson, Micheal Abattam directed our correspondent to reach out to the Army.

The Army Spokesman, when contacted said he will get back to us, but as at the time of filing the report, he was yet to get back.
