From London Hospital, Buhari Condemns The Attempted Coup In Niger Republic

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attempted coup in Niger Republic from his London hospital.

Mr. Buhari is said to be a native of the Niger Republic.

Mr Buhari had previously claimed, through his media aide Garba Shehu, that he could run Nigeria from a London hospital while undergoing medical examinations.

“Any unconstitutional attempt to depose a duly elected government is not only despicable, but also intolerable to democratic governments around the world,” Mr Buhari said in a statement released by Mr Shehu in Abuja on Wednesday.

Mr Buhari spoke on the phone with Mahamadou Issoufou, his counterpart and outgoing Nigerien President, according to a media aide.

Mr Shehu revealed that the president had cautioned that the international community would be hostile to a violent and illegitimate change of government.

Mr Buhari was a victim of a military coup in 1983 that overthrew a constitutionally elected government, taking Nigeria and its people to their knees with dictatorial fervour, but he is now a born-again democrat.

”It is utterly naïve to attempt the removal of an elected government by force. Military political adventurers should respect the will of the people and respect constitutional order.

“I’m particularly concerned about the negative impact of coups on Africa’s stability, peace and progress.

“Nigeria cannot be indifferent to these dangers to Africa. Coups are out of fashion and the involvement of the military in violent change of government is doing more harm than good to Africa,” the statement further quoted Mr Buhari.

The president urged African leaders to “remain united against coups in any guise or form,” while urging coup plotters to learn from history’s lessons about the repercussions of violent government takeovers.

He also took the opportunity to congratulate President-elect Mohamed Bazoum on his win, as well as the outgoing president’s commitment to a peaceful and orderly transition of power.

Mr Buhari also praised Niger’s security forces for putting down the onslaught against the country’s newly elected government.
