BREAKING: Supreme Court Delivers Judgment On Suit Against Sanwo-Olu
The Supreme Court has initiated the process of delivering judgments on gubernatorial disputes stemming from the 2023 elections.
A seven-member panel of justices is currently reviewing an appeal challenging the outcome of the governorship election in Lagos State. The apex court is slated to pronounce judgments on seven governorship appeals, covering states such as Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, Plateau, Ebonyi, Bauchi, and Cross River.
The Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, have contested the victory of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The LP is urging the apex court to declare that the March 18 election was marred by irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, also asserting that Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat was unqualified to contest the election.
In response, counsel to Sanwo-Olu, Nas Ogunsakin, has urged the court to dismiss the appeals, arguing that the applicants failed to provide evidence supporting their claims, and the witnesses presented were deemed incompetent.
The lead judgment, currently being delivered by Justice Mohammed Garba Lawal, pertains to the appeal by the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, challenging the declaration of Babajide Sanwoolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election.
