#EndSARS: 20 Feared Killed In Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Aba, Jos, Kano

About twenty persons were killed on Tuesday as the #EndSARS protests turned violent in Abuja, Ibadan, Plateau, Aba and Lagos with suspected hoodlums burning down police stations.

This is as Mohammed Adamu, Inspector-General of Police, on Tues­day ordered immediate nationwide deployment of anti-riot policemen to protect lives and property, following crisis trailing #EndSARS protests.

In a statement by DCP Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer, the IGP also ordered massive deployment of police operatives to strengthen security around correctional facilities nation­wide.

The statement said the or­ders are coming on the heels of increasing attacks includ­ing acts of arson and mali­cious damage to public and private facilities as recorded in some states including FCT.

 

Six Feared Killed In Abuja, Police Station Razed

Following an attempt by suspected hoodlums to hi­jack the #EndSARS protest in Dutse Alhaji area of Bwari Area Council in Abuja, no fewer than six people were confirmed dead on Tuesday.

One of the deceased was said to have been among a group of people who attacked #EndSARS protesters but the identity of his killers were not known. Five other persons were reportedly killed by se­curity operatives.

Following the develop­ment, the police post in the area was razed by irate youths.

Meanwhile, the Police Pub­lic Relations Officer (PPRO) in the FCT Command, Mariam Yusuf, however, did not imme­diately respond to media en­quiries as she neither picked her calls nor replied to the text message sent to her phone.

Eyewitnesses accused security operatives of turn­ing a blind eye to attacks by hoodlums while swooping on #EndSARS protesters.

Earlier in the day, there was tension in some parts of Sokale and FOI areas of Kubwa following invasion by soldiers who fired sporad­ically into the air to disperse #EndSARS protesters who had gathered to begin the day’s protest.

While passers-by scam­pered to safety, residents who were still in their houses im­mediately shut their doors and windows even as motor­ists on the Bwari-Dutse Alhaji road became stranded due to the ensuing gridlock on the route.

The protesters had erect­ed a barricade at the Sokale roundabout area and Winners road and had begun settling down for the protest before the invasion by soldiers in three trucks.

 

Three Die As Police Station Burn In Lagos

The Orile Iganmu Divi­sional Police Station in La­gos was, on Tuesday, burnt by some hoodlums pretending to be #ENDSARS protesters.

Our correspondent who was at the scene, reports that the station was attacked from behind by the hoodlums, who set the building on fire with petrol.

Some policemen in the sta­tion responded by shooting sporadically at the crowd of protesters.

A dead body, with injuries on his head, was cited at the scene of the incident.

The entire Orile Iganmu bus station was thrown into pandemonium.

The international route of the Lagos/Badagry Express­way became congested as mo­torists made hurried U-turn while pedestrians scampered for safety during the shootout between hoodlums and the police.

Similarly, about two per­sons were feared dead in a clash between the Lagos police and hoodlums at the Mushin area of the state.

Some persons also sus­tained gunshot injuries during the chaos.

Police officers were seen shooting in a video shared on social media.

In a similar development, at least seven persons were shot in Ajangbadi, a commu­nity in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.

According to witnesses, two of the victims died in the hospital.

Trouble started after sus­pected hoodlums attempted to overrun the station.

“Some angry youths who overpowered the police and burnt down Ojo Police Station marched to Ajangbadi but the police at Ajangbadi station were at alert,” a resident said.

“Immediately they got close to the station, police­men started shooting into the air but when they refused to leave, the officers started shooting into the crowd.

“I know one of the persons who was shot. He stays on my street. The guy, who was a bricklayer, died in the hospi­tal. Another person who lives opposite my house was shot on the leg.”

It was gathered that ag­grieved youths burnt down Ojo Police Station after a con­frontation with policemen on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Three Shot Dead In Ibadan As Protest Turns Bloody

The #EndSARS protest took another dimension in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as three persons were alleged­ly shot dead in the Ojoo area of the city on Tuesday.

Investigations revealed that the problem started early in the morning when protest­ers saw police officers in front of the station with their rifles.

The police officers report­edly lined up in a manner that seemed they were set to move into town for action.

On seeing this, the protest­ers thought that the police were ready for combat against them, so they started chanting ‘EndSARS’, ‘EndPoliceBru­tality’, EndBuhari’, among others.

Problem started when the protesters were moving closer to the police officers who, in defence, started shooting to disperse them.

In the process, three per­sons were shot dead while some police officers also sus­tained injuries.

During the melee, traders were seen scampering for safety, and the market was later deserted.

In the end, the protesters over powered the police offi­cers and set the popular Al­akara Police Station ablaze while a filling station was said to have been vandalised.

In a text message to jour­nalists, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, simply said: “Disgruntled elements/ miscreants attacked the Ojoo Police Station in the name of protest and details will come later, pls.”

In a related development, moving round major areas in Ibadan metropolis, Daily In­dependent observed that most of the police stations were un­der lock and key except that of Ojoo where the crisis had ensued.

 

One Feared Dead In Ekiti, Trucks Burnt

One person reportedly lost his life in Ado-Ekiti during Monday night protest when a Dangote truck allegedly over­ran a barricade mounted by protesters.

The sad incident ignit­ed anger and three trucks belonging to Dangote were burnt.

Commenting on the un­rest, the Police Public Rela­tions Officer, Sunday Abutu, who confirmed that the ve­hicles were burnt, however, said the command could not confirm any casualty as at press time.

Another version of the report said the victim, said to be one of the three persons attacked by thugs during the night, died hours after he was taken to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti gov­ernment has described the rumours emanating from the social media that soldiers had taken over Ado Ekiti, the state capital, and chased away pro­testers with guns as untrue and misleading.

 

Two Persons Shot Dead In Edo As Curfew Subsists

As Edo State govern­ment reaffirmed the 24-hour (round-the-clock) curfew it imposed on the state on Mon­day, the state police command has confirmed the burning of seven of their police stations, along with over 25 vehicles, in Benin City.

This is coming even as two persons were shot dead at Santana Market, along Sapele Road in Benin City, during an exchange of fire between hoodlums and policemen who were trying to maintain peace in the area on Tuesday.

The Edo State government had placed a 24-hours curfew on the state following the vio­lence which erupted on Mon­day during the #EndSARS protest.

However, the youths still made their presence in some of the roads and streets on Tuesday.

From Ekenwan Road to Airport Road, Sapele Road, and other interchange junc­tions within the Benin me­tropolis, the youths took over strategic positions as they chanted anti-government slogans.

However, Ring Road, which is in the heart of town, was de­serted.

The GRA, Ugbor, Abuja quarters, and Sapele Road were peaceful with few cab operators seen going about their business.

The protest equally re­sumed in Auchi as the youths again regrouped at the popu­lar Jattu Junction, allowing only motorists on essential duties free passage.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in parts of the state capital and adjoin­ing towns as a response to the high-jacking of the peaceful #EndSARS protests by hood­lums.

This had led to two jail breaks at two correctional centres, the burning of the seven police stations over 25 police vehicles in the state.

The police gave the names of the burnt police stations as Idogbo, Ugbekun, St. Sav­iour, Oba Market, Textile Mill, Ivbiotor and Evbotybu.

The police have also rear­rested 18 inmates of the over 1,200 prisoners that were set free by the protesters/hood­lums in the two correctional centres in Benin on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Edo State government has confirmed the deployment of security agencies to the streets to en­sure full compliance with the 24-hour curfew and warned that anyone found contra­vening the directive would be dealt with according to the law.

 

Four Killed In Kano

Four persons were killed, shops looted and vehicles burnt in Kano on Tuesday following unsubstantiated reports that a worship centre was razed along Hausa/Igbo road.

Hoodlums Set Lagos Lagoon Hospital On Fire

Some yet-to-be identified hoodlums operating under the guise of the #EndSARS protesters, on Tuesday, set the Lagoon Hospital at Liverpool, Apapa, in Lagos, on fire after the hospital allegedly rejected a gunshot victim.

Following violent attacks across the state, the police were said to have been de­ployed to Tin-Can in an at­tempt to quell possible vio­lence.

According to a report made available to Daily Indepen­dent, the armed policemen shot at the irate crowd and unfortunately hit the victim.

The victim was, however, rushed to the Lagoon Hospital where he was allegedly reject­ed right at the gate as the hos­pital authorities claimed that he was already dead.

But, in a fit of rage, the thugs set the hospital ablaze.

 

Three Killed As Cattle Sellers, Hoodlums Clash In Lagos

Tragedy struck at the Fag­ba area of Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State on Tuesday when herds­men engaged the Yoruba in a free-for-all, leaving no fewer than three people dead.

Eyewitnesses said trouble started when a trailer bring­ing herds of cows ran into a blockade mounted by #End­SARS protesters who refused to give passage to motorists.

It was gathered that the re­fusal to allow the passage of the trailer bringing in cows sparked off serious argu­ments between the herdsmen and some hoodlums who tried to hijack the protest.

Further investigation revealed that the herdsmen engaged them with bows and arrows and, at the end, three persons were confirmed dead while several persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

As at the time of filing this report, the clash was still on.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, PPRO, could not be reached for comment as he did not answer calls to his mobile phone.

Meanwhile, sources said about 10 persons died as se­curity operatives invaded the Lekki Toll Gate where thou­sands of protesters have been demonstrating against police brutality for the past 13 days. However, Daily Independent was unable to independently verify the claim.

Earlier in the day, some Twitter users raised the alarm that closed circuit tele­vision (CCTV) at the toll gate had been disconnected.
