Emefiele Opens Up After Tinubu’s Probe Panel Indicted Him

Former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, has responded to the allegations made by CBN investigator, Jim Obaze.

Obaze had claimed that there was no presidential approval for the redesign of the N200, N500, and N1,000 naira notes in 2022 among other allegations against Emefiele.

In a statement released after his release from Kuje prison, Emefiele dismissed the allegations as “barefaced lies.” He refuted Obaze’s claim that President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, Tunde Sabiu, approved the naira redesign program.

Emefiele insisted that there was indeed a presidential approval for the Naira redesign program, and he personally handed over the approval to Obaze during the investigation. He stated, “the former President Muhammadu Buhari has stated on a number of occasions that he authorised and approved the Naira redesign.”

“I am therefore at a loss as to why Mr. Jim Obaze will mislead Nigerians that there was no presidential approval,” Emefiele added.

Additionally, Emefiele denied the accusation of operating over 500 foreign accounts during his tenure at the CBN.
