EFCC Invited And Never Arrested Me – Al Makura

Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the former governor of Nasarawa, has refuted accusations that he was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming that he was just summoned in connection with some petitions filed against him.

He spoke against the backdrop of news on Wednesday that he and his wife had been arrested by the anti-graft agency on graft charges.

In a press conference yesterday, Al-Makura revealed that he was invited to provide his side of the story about several petitions filed against him, and that he personally reported to the EFCC, where he met with its chairman and some staff.

Al-Makura, a member of the National Assembly who represents Nasarawa South Senatorial District, blasted rumour mongers for spreading the tale of his incarceration.

“The rumours surprised me and as far as I am concerned, it is baseless” Al-Makura said.

He said the EFCC invited him before the Sallah break, but he informed them that he would appear after Sallah and they obliged.

“When I met with EFCC chairman, he told me there were petitions against me and they wanted to hear from me and my meeting with EFCC chairman wasn’t more than 10 minutes.”

He further stated that he discussed the petitions with some agency officials and provided them with all appropriate responses to their questions.

He claimed that the invitation had nothing to do with his desire to run for APC National Chairman.

Al-Makura stated that he is a devout member of the party and that he is awaiting guidelines before formally declaring his candidacy for the position.
