Buhari, Others Mourn As Top Politician Dies 4 Days After Celebrating His Birthday

Prominent Nigerians have been mourning the loss of a top Nigerian politician who passed away days after observing his birthday anniversary.

Those who expressed grief also includes former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. This was after the news that Dr. Onaolapo Soleye, a former Minister of Finance, had died on Wednesday at the age of 90. He celebrated his 90th birthday just days before in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday at a specialist hospital in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta.

A statement from the Soleye family expressed gratitude for his long and impactful life, announcing his passing and detailing his illustrious career. The family statement said, “Papa served the country and humanity in various capacities rising to the position of an Associate Professor in the University of Ibadan, Commissioner for Works in Ogun State, and Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria amongst others.”

The family plans to announce burial details in due course, and the statement concluded with a request for prayers for the repose of Dr. Soleye’s soul and comfort for his family.

Dr. Soleye is survived by his wife, Mrs. Modupe Womiloju Soleye, and four children – Olamide Soleye, Abimbola Fadimu, Oluwafunmilakin Soleye, and Eyitayo Soleye – along with grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Earlier this year, he lost his first son, Major General Lola Soleye.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari condoled the demise of Dr. Soleye, describing him as a rare gentleman and financial expert. Buhari acknowledged Soleye’s pivotal role in his cabinet as Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and credited him with contributing to the achievements of that administration.

Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East and a former governor, paid tribute to Dr. Soleye as a remarkable man whose dedication to kindness and good deeds impacted many people.
