BREAKING: Nigerian Doctors Call Off Strike
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has ended its month-long strike, which was scheduled to resume on Wednesday.
Remember that the doctor’s union went on strike in August after a disagreement with the federal government over the lack of medical equipment at public tertiary hospitals.
After a meeting between delegates of the Nigerian Medical Association and NARD on Sunday in Abuja, the NMA encouraged NARD to end the ongoing industrial action, according to a communique signed by NMA Secretary-General Ekpe Philips Uche.
The National Officers Committee, NOC, was charged at the meeting with ensuring the implementation of the memorandum of understanding struck with the federal government on August 21.
The association asked NOC to update the NMA’s National Executive Council on the progress made in executing the memorandum of understanding on a regular basis.
The NOC was also ordered by the NMA to keep in touch with the chairmen of the state chapters, including the FCT, about the progress accomplished.
The strike has been officially called off, according to NARD president Godiya Ishaya.
He said, ”We’ve officially suspended the strike to resume at 8:00 am on Wednesday. We made the decision in the wee hours of today. We held an emergency meeting from 5:30 pm on Sunday to the morning hours of today, and the NEC decided that having reviewed the progress made so far, the strike should be suspended,”
The doctors’ strike entered the ninth week on Monday, crippling activities in public tertiary hospitals across the country, leaving patients stranded.
