BREAKING: Lagos Govt Shuts Two Popular Markets

The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of Mile 12 and Owode Onirin markets due to severe unsanitary conditions and multiple environmental violations.

Law enforcement officers from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) carried out the closure under the directives of the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

Wahab emphasized the importance of maintaining sanitation standards in markets, stressing zero tolerance for filth. He stated that recent incidents in the two markets highlighted the urgent need for adherence to sanitation norms. The decision to close the markets, though challenging, was necessary to address prevailing environmental challenges and ensure the safety of all stakeholders.

The closure of Mile 12 and Owode Onirin markets aims to allow stakeholders to assess the situation and enhance public health and environmental conditions in those areas. The deteriorating conditions demanded immediate intervention, making the enforcement action essential.

Commissioner Wahab clarified that this enforcement was not an isolated event but part of a comprehensive strategy to promote cleanliness and compliance with environmental regulations in all markets across the state. He urged both traders and customers to prioritize hygiene and adopt sustainable practices in their daily business activities.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, stated that the closure was a response to severe unhygienic conditions and a series of environmental violations. Shutting down the markets was deemed necessary to compel a thorough cleanup and safeguard public health.
