BREAKING: IGP Orders Immediate Disbandment Of Police Monitoring Units In Lagos, Port Harcourt

Acting Inspector-General of Police Alkali Baba has directed the IGP Monitoring Satellite Offices in Lagos and Port Harcourt to be disbanded immediately following allegations from Nigerians that they were harassing them and working outside of their mandate.

Baba said the IGP Monitoring Units would be reorganized during his first meeting with Command Police Commissioners and zonal AIGs on Thursday in Abuja.

The news comes just 24 hours after the Public Service Commission asked the IGP to keep an eye on the growing number of police investigation units.

According to the tribunal, the units were causing the force significant embarrassment.

Musiliu Smith, the commission’s chairman, stated that police investigation divisions must be properly and closely monitored in order to prevent atrocities committed by officers in the line of duty.

The retired IGP also emphasized the importance of rapidly dealing with cases of officer misconduct “so that those found lacking are brought to book.”
