BREAKING: 47 Lagos Yoruba Nation Protesters Freed From Detention
Forty-seven of the 48 protesters detained by Nigerian police during the Yoruba Nation Rally on July 3, 2021, in Lagos State, have been released.
They were reportedly released after fulfilling their bail terms.
The Yoruba Nation agitators arrested in the state were granted bail on July 19 by a magistrate court in Yaba, Lagos State.
Human rights attorneys led by Olasupo Ojo and Oladapo Kayode submitted a request for their bail application.
One of their sureties must be a family member, while the other must be a community leader or clergy with proof of tax payment, according to the court.
Olasunkanmi Tanimola, Kabiru Lawanson, Chinemerem Emmanuel, Rasaki Musibau, Lukman Olalade, Olasanmi Oladipupo, Bashiru Shittu, Taofeek Abdusalam, Olamilekan Abata, Abdullahi Sikiru, Tosin Adeleye, and Babatunde Lawal are among those who have been released.
Abiodun Taiwo, Adagunodo Babatunde, Oluwafemi Adeleye, Oloye Taiwo, Saheed Kareem, Adebayo Waheed, Akinbode Sunday, Lawal Akeem, Samuel Ire, and Ogundile Dare are just a few of the others.
Mr. Maxwell Adeleye, the Communications Manager for Ilana Omo Oodua, the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, acknowledged their release.
“This is to inform the general public that 47 out of the 48 protesters arrested by the Nigerian Police during the Yoruba Nation Rally held July 3rd, 2021 have been released from detention after meeting their bail conditions,” Adeleye said.
Oba Tunde Bakare, one of the demonstrators, was not released.
The Ogboni leader (traditionalist) Bakare was charged by the Lagos State Police Command with the murder of Jumoke Oyeleke, a salesgirl who was allegedly murdered by a stray bullet during a protest in the state.
Bakare was remanded in custody, despite the fact that he was facing new counts of murder and unauthorized possession of a handgun.
The charges read in part, “That you, Tajudeen Bakare, and others now at large, on July 3, 2021, around 10am, at the Ojota area of Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Jumoke Oyeleke, with a Beretta pistol in your possession during your unlawful assembly, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
