Bingham University Speaks On Allegation Of Sexual Harassment Against Lecturers

Bingham University, a private university in Nasarawa state has reiterated it operates a policy of zero tolerance for sexual harassment on the university’s campus.

This is coming on the heels of alleged sexual harassment that purportedly took place in 2015 made against Mr. Oshekins Okere, a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, by one Miss Mary Alfa via twitter and Prof. Joseph Lori of Chemical Sciences department by an anonymous writer.

In a statement by the University, ” the University views this as a serious allegation and has investigated the matter to ascertain its veracity. The personae dramatis were interviewed, including staff that have left the university and some of the university`s Alumni.”

“Our findings reveal as follows: “Mary Alfa was admitted in 2011/2012 academic session and successfully graduated from Anatomy department in the 2014/2015 academic session.

“She reported a case of missing grade in biochemistry practical course to the exam office and ICT Unit. The department responded immediately and the results were released accordingly. There was never a time she reported a case of sexual harassment whether formally or informally according to findings.

“The allegation is coming five years after the alleged incident and the university finds it rather curious, more so that the university has open channels of communicating this kind of issues for appropriate action.

“Mr. Okere, between 2012 and 2015 had not taught any practical course.
Furthermore, he has never appeared before any Committee for misconduct.

“Prof. Lori, is a senior member of his department and the university finds him most dedicated to his duties. Prof. Lori has not been indicted for misconduct by any committee.”

The varsity said it will continue to take serious action on any report of this sort to maintain its zero-tolerance status.
