Barkindo, OPEC Secretary General, Is Dead

The departing secretary-general of OPEC, Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, passed away.

Barkindo, who was welcomed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday and later delivered a speech at the ongoing Nigerian oil and gas conference (NOG), passed away Tuesday night at around 11 p.m.

The death was verified by Mallam Mele Kyari, group managing director of NNPC Ltd., in a tweet sent out on Wednesday morning.

“We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly,” Kyari wrote.

Little is known about what caused his abrupt demise a day after he was welcomed by Buhari at the presidential palace and spoke at the conference, both of which he appeared to be in good health.

In July, Barkindo’s term as OPEC Secretary General comes to an end.
