AFCON: Nwabali Reacts After Losing Golden Gloves To Opponent

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has shared his thoughts on losing the Golden Glove of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to South Africa captain, Ronwen Williams.

Nwabali, who could have clinched the award with another clean sheet against Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday, missed out after conceding two goals.

The Nigerian goalkeeper expressed his belief that his South African counterpart was a deserving recipient of the Golden Glove.

Williams, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, was honored as the Best Goalkeeper after leading South Africa to secure the bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Williams made history as the first goalkeeper to save four penalties in a single AFCON shootout.

Throughout the tournament, Williams kept five clean sheets and conceded three goals, while Nwabali managed four clean sheets and conceded four goals.

“Ronwen Williams is a very good goalkeeper, to be honest. It’s not surprising to me that he won it; he deserves it. I am competing with someone of his caliber, and him winning the best goalkeeper of the tournament is well-deserved. I wish him well, and I give him credit,” Nwabali remarked.
