Top Party Invites Sacked Senate Chief Whip Ndume After APC’s Action
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has invited recently ousted Senate Majority Chief Whip, Sen. Ali Ndume, to join its ranks.
The invitation was extended by the SDP’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, during a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.
Gabam condemned Ndume’s removal as Chief Whip, attributing it to his criticism of government programs and policies. He labeled the leadership of the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) suggestion that Ndume could join an opposition party as an act of intolerance.
Ndume, representing Borno South (APC-Borno), was removed on Wednesday and replaced by Sen. Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno) of Borno North. This decision followed a letter entitled “Complaints Against the Unbecoming Utterances of Sen. Ali Ndume,” read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The letter was signed by APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and National Secretary, Sen. Ajibola Basiru.
Gabam defended Ndume’s criticism of government policies, stating that it was a legitimate expression of concern for the well-being of citizens. He argued that the APC should have addressed the genuine issues raised by Ndume rather than removing him from his position.
“The SDP believes that criticism is essential to a healthy democracy, and we will not stand idly by while the APC seeks to stifle dissenting voices,” Gabam stated. He extended an official invitation to Ndume to join the SDP and continue his advocacy for social justice, good governance, and democratic principles.

Gabam praised Ndume’s courageous stand against what he called the APC’s authoritarian tendencies and welcomed him to the SDP. He emphasized that Ndume’s experience and ranking as a senator are invaluable.
Gabam advised the APC and the Presidency to embrace criticism, listen to Nigerians’ concerns, and work towards a more inclusive democracy. He expressed concern that Ndume’s removal undermines the principles of democracy and fair hearing.
He compared Ndume’s removal to the suspension of Sen. Abdul Ningi for raising concerns about alleged budget padding and noted that similar issues were raised by former Senate President Sen. Ahmed Lawan and Sen. Adams Oshiomole, who faced repercussions for speaking out.
“This trend is alarming and undermines the principles of democracy and fair hearing,” Gabam concluded.
