BREAKING: South West Govs Blast Malami, IGP Over Face-off Between Police, Sanwo-Olu

Governors from the country’s South West have denounced an event in Lagos State’s Magodo Phase 2 Estate when a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, refused to follow Governor Babajide Sanwo-instructions Olu’s about a police invasion of the estate.

The governors’ statement, which was personally signed by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Chairman of the South West Governors’ Forum, claimed that the CSP’s behavior was not only humiliating but also alarming.

The police officer was seen in a viral video on Tuesday telling the Lagos State Governor, who had gone to the Mogodo residential estate to mediate over a land dispute, that only the Inspector General of Police, IGP, and the Attorney General of the Federal can order him to leave the estate with his men.

While portraying the episode as a brazen assault on decency, Akeredolu slammed Attorney General Abubakar Malami for his role in the scenario, calling it a “act of severe moral turpitude,” in a statement released on Wednesday.

President Muhammadu Buhari must reign in the excesses of those beneath him, according to Akeredolu, who also noted that the IGP must explain the justification for the intervention.

Sanwo-Olu was assured of his colleagues’ support by the Chairman of the South West Governors, who also recommended the Lagos State Governor to deploy the Amotekun Corps for adequate protection and security of his people.

“We are in possession of a video which has gone viral on the social media concerning the disgraceful exchange between a police officer, a CSP, and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu, the supposed Chief Security Officer of the State, at the Magodo Residential Estate.

“The content of the video is very disconcerting, and this is being charitable. The utter disrespect, which underlines the response of the officer to the Governor establishes, beyond doubt, the impracticability of the current system, dubiously christened “Federalism”. An arrangement, which compels the Governor of a State to seek clarifications on security issues in his jurisdiction from totally extraneous bodies or persons, is a sure recipe for anarchy.”
