Police In Massive Deployment Move To Stop Road Workers, NURTW’s Planned Protest In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command informed residents on Wednesday that they can go about their daily business without fear, claiming that it has deployed “huge” patrol teams in every nook and cranny of the state to prevent law and order breakdowns.

In an interview with Punch, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, claimed the command had received unsubstantiated allegations that enraged members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers were planning a demonstration in strategic locations around the state.

He said, “We cannot take chances. We have done massive deployment of police patrol teams to every nook and cranny including parks and garages in the state. There is no cause for alarm.”

Following weeks of continuous strife and leadership wrangling, the union’s national headquarters suspended its Lagos State Chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya, alias MC Oluomo, on Thursday.

Following that, Akinsanya and his lieutenants declared their retirement from the union. He also told them to stop giving out NURTW tickets in parking lots and garages.

The suspension of MC Oluomo by the union’s national council was notified in a letter signed by NURTW General Secretary Kabiru Yau on March 9, 2022.

He was charged with insubordination and gross misconduct, as well as scheming to create a crisis and unleash mayhem on NURTW branches in Lagos that refused to follow his purported directive not to heed orders from the national headquarters.

The Lagos State Police Command advised NURTW members against any planned demonstration in the state on Tuesday.

Abiodun Alabi, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, issued the warning on Tuesday, stressing that the police will not tolerate any type of protest by any group.

He did, however, reassure inhabitants of the state that additional security measures had been put in place by the police to prevent any breakdown of law and order in any section of the state.
