Peter Obi Reveals What Kenneth Okonkwo Did In LP After He Blasted Him, Dumped Party
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has affirmed that despite Kenneth Okonkwo’s recent criticism of his leadership, Okonkwo remains a valued ally.
Obi disclosed the key roles Okonkwo played in LP before and during the 2023 elections, including standing firmly behind him and backing the party against all odds.
On Sunday, Okonkwo criticized Obi’s handling of internal party issues. Having joined the LP in 2022, Okonkwo accused Obi of failing to address the party’s internal crisis and of not adequately building the party or resolving leadership conflicts.
In an open letter posted on X, Okonkwo stated, “Every member of the Labour Party is confused about its future due to a lack of leadership from Peter Obi. Unfortunately, I cannot provide clarity on his position because I am unsure myself.”
He continued, “I cannot continue to represent a leader whose stance on critical issues I do not understand. I am dismayed that Obi has not openly supported the Labour Unions who founded the LP to advocate for workers’ welfare, leading some to claim that Obi is now the problem. The Labour Unions are now facing challenges from those attempting to hijack their party, a situation that could have been resolved by a clear statement from Obi. I cannot continue under these conditions.”
In response, Obi took to his X handle on Monday to express that Okonkwo’s differing views do not make him an adversary but rather a valued friend and a strong voice.

Obi wrote, “Yesterday, I read Kenneth Okonkwo’s letter in which he expressed differing opinions about our party’s issues. I want to make it clear that Okonkwo remains my dear brother and trusted ally. I urge everyone to avoid referring to him as a mole or making negative comments. Okonkwo has been steadfast in his support, and his loyalty is invaluable.”
He added, “Disagreements are natural and should be handled with respect and decorum. Differing opinions do not turn someone into an enemy. Constructive dialogue is essential, rather than resorting to personal attacks.”
Obi further stated, “As a leader, I value learning and listening to different perspectives. I prefer to engage with those who challenge my views and take their advice if it proves beneficial.”
He concluded by encouraging supporters to remain strong and focused, emphasizing that unity, respect, and civility should prevail, even amid disagreements.
