Sylvester Oromoni: 6 Suspects Arraigned, Remanded In Custody

Three students and three staff members of Dowen College Lekki were remanded in custody by a Lagos Chief Magistrate Court yesterday for the attack and death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni Junior.

Following an application by the Lagos State Police Command to retain the suspects in custody awaiting the conclusion of its investigation into the terrible incident, Magistrate A.O. Olatunbosu issued the order.

Despite the police’s request for a 30-day remand, the court only allowed 25 days and ordered the young suspects to be held at the juvenile remand center.

The court also ordered that three employees be placed under arrest and that the case file be duplicated and given to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal consultation.

Omoroni, who was 12 years old at the time, died from injuries acquired during an alleged assault by five of his coworkers who sought to initiate him into the cult.

Following public uproar, police authorities launched an inquiry on Monday and questioned three pupils earlier.

On Tuesday, the Lagos State Police Command announced that five Dowen College pupils and three housemasters were already in arrest for alleged participation in the killing of a classmate.

Three students from the college are currently assisting the police in their investigation, according to the state commissioner of police, Hakeem Odumosu.

Four of the pupils were allegedly cited by the victim’s parents as being directly involved in the crime, while another student is supporting police investigations, according to the police.

He stated that no one is above the law, and that the police would carry out their duties in accordance with juvenile laws.

“The students whose names were mentioned are in police custody and investigation is on. Equally too, I have gotten in touch with my colleague in Delta State,” he said.

The police authorities had so far refused to make public the names of the suspects in its custody over the incident.
