Panel Orders Disgraced DCP, Abba Kyari To Appear March 30 Over Fresh Allegations
The appearance of suspended DCP Abba Kyari in a petition of claimed unlawful arrest filed by three people has been set for March 30 by an independent investigative panel.
The Panel is looking into allegations of human rights breaches by the Nigerian Police’s former Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other sections.
In a petition designated 2020/IIP-SARS/ABJ/205, the petitioners, Ambrose Mairungu and Blessing Dung, claimed that Yakubu Danjuma, Ibrahim Daniel, and Choji, Dung’s spouse, were wrongfully arrested, held, tortured, and subjected to inhumane treatment by Kyari.
On March 11, the panel ordered retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to produce Kyari on March 22 to defend himself.
Mr Abdullahi Haruna, SAN, counsel to Kyari, wrote an administrative letter to the chairman of the panel in response to that ruling.
He’s asking for all petitions mentioning Kyari’s name to be made public so he can analyze them and reply appropriately. As a result, he requested that the panel grant him access to the proceedings in such circumstances, as well as a two-month grace period.

The chairman, retired Justice Suleiman Galadima, was represented by Mr Garba Tetengi, SAN, who said the panel does not have the luxury of time but can afford him a week.
The hearing and cross-examination of PW1 and 2 were then postponed until March 30.
In the petition, Dung, the third victim’s wife, stated that her husband received a phone call from his friend Danjuma on December 17, 2019, asking for a meeting outside the house.
“I followed my husband outside and I sighted two tinted-glass vehicles with IRT written on them.
“I saw armed police officers who came out from the vehicles, cuffed my husband, shot in the air and drove off with him,” she said. She also prayed the panel to award N10million in compensation.
